Facebook has taken a humanitarian step in India which one can only appreciate. Facebook is going to list willing blood donors on its network for emergencies in India.
Facebook says that like most developing countries, India has an acute shortage of safe blood that is readily available to the people in need. This shortage often creates situations where relatives of the patient have to look for donors who might readily provide the blood. This is where Facebook wants to play an important role.
Using its vast network Facebook is ideally situated to connect people who are in need of blood with people who are willing to provide. Even before this initiative was introduced, people regularly took to Facebook to post about the need for blood. And it is this that prompted Facebook to take action.
Facebook has announced their new effort to make it easier for people to sign up as donors while being actively connected to the people and other organisations.
Facebook has started working in tandem with non-profit organizations, health industry experts, potential donors, and people who have previously used Facebook to find blood donors.
The social media company is scheduled to launch this initiative on October 1, which happens to be National Blood Donor Day, when people will be able to go up and be listed as a blood donor. To encourage the participation for the event, Facebook will be putting out an advertisement in the newsfeed. All information about the donation and sign up would remain in “Only me” privacy option until made public by the user.
Facebook gave a cold shoulder to Apple and went ahead with the launch on Android and mobile web first. Apart from individuals Facebook will have to provide donors for organisations in need of blood. When a notification for blood donation is created on Facebook, it will send out an alert to the nearby donors to review the request and contact the requestor directly though WhatsApp, Messenger or a phone call. The requestor will not be able to see the details of any donor unless they wish to reveal it themselves.
