Google has just launched its two flagship smartphones of the year, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL in an event in San Francisco, US. The two handsets are the follow-ups to the last year’s Pixel and the Pixel XL. Both of them carry an almost similar looking design but with certain tweaks.
Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 price and availability
The search giant has priced its Pixel 2 at $649 for the 64GB version and $849 for the Pixel 2 XL 64GB version. Both also come in 128GB storage variants. It is up for pre-orders in the US already. The first wave of countries where the Google Pixel 2 will reach include Australia, Germany, Canada and India.
The Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL have the same metal+glass back panel. However, the glass area is now reduced and the rear camera design has also been changed. Both smartphones are IP67 rated, which means they are dust and water resistant and ditch the 3.5mm headphone jack. Running Android 8.0 Oreo out-of-the-box, the duo also have a tweaked home screen. The home screen has the Google Search bar at the bottom. It has been replaced by a feature called ‘At a Glance’ which lets you know about your upcoming meetings or flights.
Google Pixel 2, Pixel 2 XL specifications
Talking about their specifications, the Google Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL both sport almost the same set of innards except for the screen size, resolution and the battery capacity.
Both are powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor along with Adreno 540 and 4GB LPDDR4X RAM. Coming in 64GB and 128GB inbuilt storage models, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel2 XL come with front-facing speakers and USB Type-C port at the bottom. They support dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v5.0, GPS, GLONASS and NFC.
Google has introduced ‘Active Edge’ on the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL, using which it is possible to squeeze the sides of the handset to fire the Google Assistant.
Whats different is the screen size and the battery capacity.
They both have a 12.2MP rear camera with f/1.8 aperture and an 8MP front-facing camera with f/2.4 aperture. The rear camera comes with the ability to record 4K videos at 30fps. The Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL have EIS and OIS for smooth video recording.
The Pixel 2 comes in Just Black, Clearly White and Kinda Blue colours. It has a 5-inch full-HD (1080×1920 pixels) AMOLED display with 2.5D glass and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It is backed by a 2700mAh battery, which is rated to deliver 7 hours of life in 15 minutes of charging.
The Pixel 2 XL will arrive in Just Black and Black and White colours. It has a 6-inch QHD+ (2880×1440 pixels) pOLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. It is backed by a 3520mAh battery with same charging capabilities as the Pixel 2.
