Leading smartphone maker Apple has been in the news on and off since the launch of its new iPhones. iPhone X, in particular, has ushered the company in a new light and made them stand far out. It is undoubtedly one of the most innovative and well-executed phones of this year. But the Cupertino based company has a lot more in store for us and it has been hinted in a form of a patent.
Apple had filed a patent for foldable smartphones in the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) in 2014 and it just got approved as of last month. Now foldable smartphones are nothing new though. ZTE has already showcased one earlier this year.
But the Apple patent shows a device that can have its screen fold into two, something that has not been mass produced yet. The smartphone shown in the patent will have an extremely thin OLED panel which would be folded on a hinge into a clamshell form.
“An electronic device may have a flexible portion that allows the device to be folded. The device may have a flexible display. The flexible display may have a bending region that allows the display to bend along a bend axis when the device is folded,” said Apple in its patent application.
Apple was recently linked with LG and is said to be developing a display in a partnership. The company has worked with Samsung for this year’s iPhone X because for the latter’s OLED panels but it seems the production partner will change later.
In addition to this, Apple also considers Samsung to be an arch-rival in the smartphone segment so it might not want to stick with the South Korean firm for long. Samsung, on its part, has almost informed everyone about the ‘Galaxy X’ that it may introduce next year. The Galaxy X is being proposed as a foldable smartphone by the firm.
Apart from plans to launch smartphones with foldable displays, KGI Securities analyst and a reliable Apple tipster Ming Chi-Kuo has confirmed that the iPhone X’s display will reach all the 2018 iPhone models.
Besides the flagship smartphone, rumours have it that Apple is planning to launch a new version of the iPhone SE that will primarily be built in India. And in terms of differences with the older phones, Apple is set to introduce newer modem chips that will provide better network speeds. And apart from this, the company is also rumoured to introduce dual-SIM support in 2018 iPhone models.
The new iPhones from Apple will probably be in three different display sizes and with different resolutions as well, says Kuo. It is reportedly lowering the minimum prices of the next year iPhones, making it affordable to more buyers.
