Sony has not only been increasing its footprint in the home appliance and smartphone sectors since years but has also been a major part of the video game industry, courtesy the ‘PlayStation’ brand. While we are now on the fourth-generation of PlayStation consoles, not many of us got the chance to play on the PS1 or the first generation. However, Sony is giving you a taste of its PlayStation 1 this month with a launch of a snowboard. Yes, you heard that right.
The Japanese tech firm has collaborated with Never Summer, a water and winter sports brand, to launch a snowboard based on the classic PlayStation 1 theme.
Like the PS1, the new snowboard also comes with a grey-ish colour along with retro-style multicoloured stripes on one end and the rainbow ‘PS’ logo on the other. If you ever owned the 1st-gen PlayStation gaming console then the aesthetics on the snowboard may also seem familiar to you. The big, round disk trays with opening and power on/off buttons can also be seen.
However, the snowboard is in ‘limited edition’ for a reason. Sony is selling just 100 of these at $500 (roughly Rs 32,700) per board. The description of the snowboard says it to feature “Ripsaw Rocker Camber Profile, NS SuperLight Wood Core, and mid flex.” It is unfortunately not available in all the countries except for the US.
Sony seems to be in love with its first generation PlayStation. The limited edition PS1 themed snowboard is not the first dedication by the company to its first ever console. In 2014 Sony introduced a 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4, which essentially was the PS4 console but in PS1 theme. It came in the same grey-ish tone along with a rainbow PS logo. Even the DualShock controllers and the motion sensors that came with the console were in grey.
The firm just last week confirmed it will be bringing a new PS VR headset soon. The wearable device will be a slight hardware upgrade over the current one and will come with virtual reality capabilities.
