Adverts are the life support system of Android apps as they provide the much-needed moolah for the developers. There’s isn’t much else that pays for an app that has no monetization, so adverts are how developers tend to earn. But as we all know sometimes developers push it too far in the quest to earn money and make it irritating for the users.
Though we all want adverts to be removed, it is not going to happen. But Google is now trying to make the life of users a bit better by banning applications that display adverts on the lock screen. There are some applications that have made lives just a bit difficult for us like UC Browser, Xender, ES App Locker, GO apps (Go Weather, Keyboard, SMS, Next Browser) which showed advertisements on the lock screen inadvertently. Some of these apps show have over 100 million downloads and feature among the list of top apps on the Play Store.
Google’s new regulation simply does not say that applications that show ads on the lock screen, it is a bit more complicated than that. For the record, it says, “Unless the exclusive purpose of the app is that of a lock screen, apps may not introduce ads or features that monetize the locked display of a device.”
This means that apps whose function pertain to that of lock screen can still show adverts on the lock screen. But no other apps can do the same. This was positively received by the Reddit community where there was even a thread where people were cataloging apps that show ads on the lock screen. Users on this thread have even remarked that applications that some come pre-installed on Samsung phones show advertisements on the lock screen.
Google has shown a heavy hand in dealing with advertisements in the last year and has even removed 2 billion of them last year itself. And in the notification, that talks about the adverts that appear on the lock screen Google has some other specifications as well. In these Google prohibits ads that make the user click inadvertently, or that forces the user to submit personal information, ads that interfere with other apps of functions of the phone and apps that show inappropriate content.
