Xiaomi has been one of the strongest brands when we talk about the budget smartphone segment. It has a full-fledged army placed in the sub-Rs 15,000 segment, leaders of which is the Redmi 4, Xiaomi’s best selling handsets in India. Magnifying its focus more towards India, which also happens to be one of the largest smartphone markets, Xiaomi is ending this year with a few more budget handsets. While it recently introduced the Redmi Y1 series, yesterday the company launched its ‘Desh Ka Smartphone’.
Yes, that how the company was touting the device before the launch. And yesterday it put all the assumptions to an end by launching the Xiaomi Redmi 5A.
Interestingly, Xiaomi Redmi 5A or ‘Desh Ka Smartphone’ launched last month in China. However, there are some customisations that make the handset truly ‘Indian’. Specifications-wise, everything stays the same.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A price and availability
You can get the device in two variants based on 2GB RAM + 16GB inbuilt storage and 3GB RAM + 32GB inbuilt storage at Rs 5,999 and Rs 6,999.
However, just before the end of live stream video, Xiaomi’s vice president and India chief Manu Kumar Jain gave a ‘surprise gift’ for the customers. He slashed the price of the 2GB RAM variant by Rs 1,000, making its price tag reach Rs 4,999. As a result, this makes the new Redmi 5A also the cheapest by the company in India.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A vs Nokia 2 vs Moto C
Although the three smartphones fall in the same price range, they are different on many levels and perform in varied ways. Nokia 2 is one of the most recent budget smartphones by HMD Global, while Moto C has been in the market since quite some time. Based on the specifications, here are our 2 cents on how these may perform and which one would have the edge over others. For the reference, Moto C costs Rs 5,999 while the Nokia 2 costs Rs 6,999.
We believe Nokia 2 takes the cake here. We’re saying this because although it has the same 5-inch HD (720×1280 pixels) display as the Redmi 5A, the Nokia 2 as per the official spec sheet on the website, comes with Corning Gorilla Glass 3 coating and a higher contrast ratio of 1:1300 as compared to Redmi 5A’s 1:1000. Moto C stays behind with a 5-inch FWVGA (854×480 pixels) display.
Xiaomi Redmi 5A is the one leading the race here with its quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 processor and 2GB/3GB RAM combination. Moto C’s quad-core MediaTek MT6580m comes close but is supported by 1GB RAM, which on paper, makes it slightly less powerful. Nokia stays behind with a less powerful quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 212 processor and 1GB LPDDR3 processor.
Once again Xiaomi wins this round with its 13MP rear camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 5MP front-facing camera with f/2.0 aperture. While Moto C has a 5MP rear camera and a 2MP front-facing camera, the Nokia 2 comes with an 8MP rear autofocus camera and a 5MP fixed-focus camera.
The battery is one section that cannot be truly judged until unless you use it for a while. We haven’t yet used the Redmi 5A long enough to jump to any conclusion, all we can do is to see the capacities and assume which one is the best. According to the official spec list, Nokia 2 has a 4100mAh battery, which is considerably high as compared to Redmi 5A’s 3000mAh battery and Moto C’s 2350mAh battery.
Like the battery section, the design of the smartphones too may vary from person to person. We would prefer Xiaomi Redmi 5A given its simple design that complements its metallic appearance. Nokia 2 falls at the second position while the Moto C can be placed in the third position.
When it comes to the operating system, we are not a big fan of heavy user interfaces. Hence both Moto C and Nokia 2 get our preference given that they run near stock Android OS and get OS updates faster than Xiaomi’s MIUI. Nokia, in particular, is doing better in rolling out the updates than Motorola right now.
